Overview

Basilicata is sometimes called Italy's "forgotten region", a title that is could not deserve less. Basilicata has an amazing variety of natural resources, among which fossile and solar energy, wine and grain - almost all Italian wheat comes from here.

It also sports a beautifully differentiated landscape, from the Lucanian Dolomites to the Pollino National Park, the Calanchi or badlands and historic cities like Matera. It has a developing tourist industry, which is characterized by a genuine hospitable attitude and affordable pricing. There is no real busy season,  except maybe in Matera during summer.

Basilicata is often called Lucania, which is partly historically correct. The entire province of Potenza does cover a large part of what was once ruled by the Lucanians, the Italic population which inhabited present-day Campania, Basilicata and Calabria until Roman times. The proud Lucanians were a warrior people that ruled vast territories inland until approximately 300 B.C., alternatively trading and warring with Greeks and other seafaring folk.

The Basilicata Bike Trail offers three round trips with different lengths and surfaces for a wide range of bicycle types, each offering a unique cycling experience. So regardless of whether you ride a Mountain Bike, Race Bike, Gravel Bike or Touring bike, the trail is available to you. See the Itinerary section below for details.

If you love vast open spaces and trafficless roads, varied natural landscapes, adventure and exploring, then this is a trip for you! Let Cervati Tours take you on a journey of discovery across this amazing part of South-Italy.

The Trail was born as a yearly cycling event, but is now available all year long via Cervati Tours. The best seasons for the Trail are spring and autumn.

Meanwhile, the Basilicata Bike Trail events continue to promote cycling in Basilicata twice yearly. Cervati Tours is a fan and supporter of these non-profit events and invites you wholeheartedly to participate. If there is anything we can assist you with in preparing, feel free to drop us a line.

This year's spring dates are May 30th through June 2nd. For more info, see the BBT website: https://www.basilicatabiketrail.it/

You will arrive at the event starting point in Potenza, capital of the Province of Potenza, with its steep historic center and modern outskirts. Here you will settle in for the night to rest up before your journey starts.

The Bradano Route is by far the toughest of the three trail options:

Distance: 381 km
Elevation: 8030 m
Offroad: 30%

The most challenging trail in terms of kilometers and elevation gain, suitable for mountain biking and gravel biking. The route heads east along historic sheep tracks, trails, and disused asphalt roads, then toward the Bradano Valley to Monteserico Castle, immersed in the vastness of the fields and views of the agrarian reform. Yet another side to Basilicata, where the gaze wanders across the hills of Irsina and Grassano (first bivouac point). The trail crosses the Basento River and heads toward the gullies, before turning west and entering the Gallipoli Cognato and Lucanian Dolomites Park. After Castelmezzano, the trail enters the Apennines and passes through Laurenzana (second bivouac point). The return to Potenza is a succession of forests, majestic trees, and high-altitude meadows.
The many faces of Basilicata in a single trail: hills, rocky peaks, gullies, and beech forests.

BEWARE: This trail requires significant training and experience

Suitable bike types: MTB, gravel with at least 48 mm tyres, agile gears and excellent riding skills

The Basento route is accessible for all levels of experience:

  • Distance: 229 km
  • Elevation: 4.740 m
  • Offroad: 30%

The trail follows a circular route centered around Basilicata's main river, the BASENTO. For the first 60 km, it runs alongside the BRADANO trail, then separates from it, making a sharp cut toward Grassano, where it intersects with the other two trails again. From here, the trail heads directly south, entering the Gallipoli Cognato forest, which heralds the rocky spires of the Piccole Dolomiti Lucane. From Castelmezzano to Laurenzana, the two trails continue together, until returning to Potenza along the Apennine ridge.
A ride bursting with beauty in the wild heart of Basilicata.

The best trail for anyone who is new to this kind of experience and wants to have a great adventure.

Suitable bike types: MTB / gravel bike

This trail is accessible to any bike, from Race to Gravel, electrically assisted or not.

  • Distance: 325 km
  • Elevation: 5850 m
  • Offroad: 0%

The added value of the BBT: you can ride a route entirely on asphalt without the stress of car traffic; we challenge you to count the cars you encounter. Admittedly, the surfaces are anything but perfect, but they're still doable even on a racing bike. The ROAD route, shares much of the same landscape and villages with the Bradano Route, but it's also the only one that passes through Accettura, a town famous for its unique Maggio tree ritual. From the Lucanian Dolomites to the provincial capital of Potenza, it's a continuous up and down of hairpin bends, panoramas, and ever-changing scenery.
A perfect route for those who don't like rough surfaces.

This trail is for those who want to experience the amazing sights of Basilicata from the comfort of the paved road.

Suitable bikes: gravel, touring, racing

With a heart full of impressions and tired legs, you'll settle in for your last night on the Trail.

Potenza offers a good choice of restaurants and accommodations selected for your comfort. From here you'll find your way back to your airport of choice or continue on your journey.

FAQ

I don't want to bring my own bike on the plane. What are my options?
There are sufficient options rental in the general area. If you need an e-bike, touring bikes are most prevalent, while electrically assisted MTB and gravel bikes can be a bit more challenging to come by.
Can the Trail be done on an e-bike?
Yes, although we may need to adjust the daily distances to make sure we have a safe place to store and recharge the bike overnight. It is most handy if your battery is removable.
What type of clothes should I pack?
Make sure you are dressed for both sunny and rainy days. A light-weight set of raincoat + rain trousers is highly recommended. We recommend using fabric types that do not absorb humidity. Rather than using for example cotton, consider technical fabrics made for outdoor and sports activities. For comfort, use shoes that have a rigid sole rather than soft sole shoes. In case you suffer saddle pains, we recommend using padded bike shorts. We recommend packing light weight. Your hosts are used to receiving bikers and will gladly offer you solutions for doing a quick hand wash of your biking clothes.
What kind of weather can I expect?
The Cilento National Park is very big and has different weather types depending on whether you are at the seaside or inland. Inland tends to be a bit fresher and more humid, whereas the coastal towns tend to have drier and warmer weather. Temperatures during the recommended travel periods in spring and autumn are in the mid-twenties Celsius, with chance of showers. The most reliable source for rainfall prediction is the military meteorological service "Aeronautica Militare" (mobile app available on all main platforms).
I don't speak Italian. Do people speak English there?
The short answer is: unlikely. However, most locals are utterly charming and will do whatever they can to bridge the gap. Whether it be through gestures or translation apps on their mobiles, most will make the effort to understand you and make themselves understood.
What happens if my bike breaks down?
The first thing you do is call Cervati Tours. We will help you to figure out the best course of action for your particular situation. There are many smaller issues you can solve on your own, but if the porblem is more serious, we will find ways of getting you to a bike repair point along the route, or to get assistance to you. Beware that this will entail an extra cost, not only for transport, but also for the time and material involved in solving the issue. You will get an estimate beforehand so that you know more or less what we're dealing with.
