Overview

Follow in the footsteps of the Palinuro Primrose, with this adventurous multi-day hike from the Monte Cervati, highest peak of the Campania region, all the way to the seaside wonder of Capo Palinuro.

The trail is inspired by the Palinuro Primrose, a tiny yellow wild flower that had made its way from the top of Cervati Mountain to the Palinuro peninsula over the course of many many centuries. Both the original mountain version and its seaside descendant can still be observed today. The best chance to see one is the Molpa near Palinuro in late February, early March.

This 7-day trip consists of 6 amazing legs, each between 13 and 20 km, so you are assured to get a good workout. It's designed specially for the more experienced hiking enthusiasts who aren't afraid of a physical challenge. The total height difference is 1899 meters from Cervati peak to Palinuro beach, but there will be a fair number of climbs along the way.

You will be staying in rifugi (mountain cabins) and other small-scale accommodations along the route so that you can start your next day well-rested. Your hosts will welcome you as only South Italians can. Your stay with them includes breakfast, packed lunch and an evening meal.

Since there is no cellular reception on a significant part of the mountain, you will be given a satellite comms device for your daily check-in and for emergency communications if necessary.

You can choose to make your own way to your first accommodation, based on our detailed instructions and tips. Alternatively, you can opt for private transport during the checkout process. The same goes for transport on departure day.

You can either carry your entire gear or, if you prefer to walk with less weight, we can arrange for your big(ger) bag to be transported separately between accommodations.

Do you want to stay a couple of days longer to enjoy the beach? Let us know during the checkout process.

The best period for this trip is anywhere from early March to mid-June and from September to early November. The closer you get to the winter season, the more chance you will have of snow on the first days of your trip. This will mean packing wisely and making sure you make the best use of daylight hours. Be sure to check out the FAQ for what to pack.

Itinerary

No details found.

From your arrival airport, you will make your way to your first accommodation in Sala Consilina. Your host Riccardo will help you get orientated and answer any questions you may have about the days ahead.

You will get a ride to the starting point of your trip at the foot of the Monte Cervati. From there you will make the hike up to the Rifugio for a meal and a good night's sleep.

Your first full-length leg is perhaps the most challenging one. Depending on the season you will find snow on the mountain. Your hike will take you near the sanctuary of the Madonna della Neve - subject of great devotion in neighbouring towns of Sanza and Piaggine - and along the Nevera, where snow gathers all year long. The Nevera used to be an important source of ice for locals before the advent of electrical refrigeration.
You will arrive at the Croce di Pruno, where you'll take a small deviation toward your accommodation for the night: Chalet Nicoletti.

From Chalet Nicoletti you can take a quick peek at the impressive Grava di Vesalo, a natural depression in the earth that is common to the area, before resuming your hike at the Croce di Pruno.
From there you will make your way to Rofrano over dirt paths and through woodlands. You will see the vegetation change slowly as you begin to feel the air warm up on your hike down the hilly landscape.
In Rofrano, you will stay with local legend Cono at his restaurant and B&B.

Leaving Cono's in Rofrano, you'll make your way to Montano Antilia during a shorter leg, that takes you over the Varolovagno mountain pass. You will notice the weather and vegetation changing as soo as you come out of the pass. In the afternoon, you will be welcomed at the Agriturismo ai Monaci in this scenic town, to get a wholesome meal and a good night's sleep before embarking on your journey to the seaside.

Make sure to have your bathing suit at hand for this long walk down to the Mediterranean waters. The hike down is filled with amazing views of the coast. Smell the air get saltier as you walk towards the deep blue sea. You will arrive at the Arco Naturale where you can finally dip your toes, or more, into the fresh water. You will spend the night nearby in B&B La Via del Mare before your last day of the hike.

Your final hike takes you from the Arco Naturale all over the Capo Palinuro peninsula, known as the emblematic picture of Cilento. The peninsula sports countless beautiful views, an archeaological site, a lighthouse and a number of ruins of the medieval coastal defense system. You'll continue the walk over beaches and along the coastal path that lines the town of Palinuro, giving you lot's of opportunities for a dip in the sea on your way to your final accommodation.

After breakfast, you will find your way to your transport option of choice. You will be given detailed instructions on how to catch your best public transport option. Alternatively, if you wish to book private transports, you can do so during the checkout process.
Moreover, if you prefer to prolong your stay at the coast for a number of nights, you can let us know during the checkout process. We'll be happy to extend your booking. For more extensive assistance on Palinuro and surrounding area, feel free to drop us a line and we'll help you plan your stay in more detail.

FAQ

What type of clothes should I pack?
Spring: you are likely to find snow on your first day, since you'll start from just below the highest peak of Campania region at almost 1900 meters from sea level. Make sure your shoes are water proof, not just water repellent. Also, wool socks are best, but if your skin does not like wool, then be sure to pack thick socks made specially for hiking. An extra change of socks is not a luxury. Make sure you have a good waterproof jacket with you at all times, to put over the multiple layers of short and long sleeve shirts that you also need. Avoid cotton if you tend to sweat during excercise. The cold weather will send your body in hypothermia, which can be very dangerous in the mountains. Instead, choose a wool undershirt or layer up fabrics made specially for hiking, those that do not retain water. As you descend from the mountain, you'll feel inceasingly warmer, so make sure your layers contain enough short-sleeve or no-sleeve shirts. Also, pack a second pair of long hiking trousers. If you have one, a pair of zip-off pants will help to keep you cool as you approach the sea-side.
What kind of weather can I expect?
The Cilento National Park is very big and has different weather types depending on whether you are at the seaside or inland. Inland tends to be a bit fresher and more humid, whereas the coastal towns tend to have drier and warmer weather. Temperatures during the recommended travel periods in spring and autumn are in the mid-twenties Celsius, with chance of showers. The most reliable source for rainfall prediction is the military meteorological service "Aeronautica Militare" (mobile app available on all main platforms).
I don't speak Italian. Do people speak English there?
The short answer is: unlikely. However, most locals are utterly charming and will do whatever they can to bridge the gap. Whether it be through gestures or translation apps on their mobiles, they will make the effort to understand you and make themselves understood.
